Every WEDNESDAY  - LIO PICCOLO BY BIKE

Dunes, vegetable gardens, lagoon valleys and pink flamingos

Every Wednesday morning and afternoon, departure from the small coastal villages, skirting Ca’Savio beach with its natural dunes and coastline woods and passing through fields of local produce. Crossing the bridge on the Pordelio canal takes us to the hamlet of Treporti. Canals and shoals alternate with cultivated fields and houses dotted here and there to lead to Corte del Prà, a lovely square with a landowner’s mansion, courtyard, stables and oratory. Here the lagoon takes over and the road winds along the banks of the fishing valleys to reach the ancient, solitary hamlet of Lio Piccolo, surrounded by water, immersed in silence interrupted only by the flights and calls of the many bird species. Black-winged stilts nest on the shoals: at this time it’s quite common to see the couples fussing around their nests. You can hear their unmistakable cry as they swoop, light and fascinating, above your head. But the real attraction is the flamingos. For some years now these incredible waders have settled in the lagoon and are particularly numerous at Lio Piccolo, from where you can observe them with the naked eye.

Every THURSDAY - THE LAND OF THE RIVER PIAVE
The River Piave and reclaimed land: stories of land and water

Cycling along the ancient Litoranea Veneta (a canal linking Venice with Trieste) takes us to Cortellazzo, a quaint little port and fishing village at the mouth of the River Piave, and the reclaimed land of Torre di Fine, Brian and Eraclea. A boat bridge takes us across the river, considered sacred to the homeland because it became the front line during the First World War, and then we cycle to explore a territory rich in history, culture and traditions, touching the renowned Northern Adriatic beaches and going through rural hamlets, seeing draining pumps, water works, natural oases and crops typically grown on reclaimed land. There is a visit to a farm (Azienda Agricola La Fagiana) which owns one of the area’s last paddy fields; we cycle through coastal woods and waterways linked to Italy’s history and once back at our destination we can choose to taste some of the territory’s finest produce.
